How to play defense Empty
PostSubject: How to play defense   How to play defense EmptySun Mar 07, 2010 6:36 pm

I saw kobe bryant pull a jump shot on Dwight Howard in the lakers vs. Magic. Howard jumped forward to contest the shot. I notice that everyone in the NBA does this to contest it. If Dwight were to jump straight up he could get up to over 11 feet, which we saw in the dunk contest. If he just jumps straight up at eleven feet that is easily blocked than getting your hand on his hand too late.

Also, at the end of games kobe bryant is not going to drive at the end of games. He is too used to taking jump shots. So when guarding him you want to get hip to hip and jump as high as you can as soon as you see the ball go above his hip. I don't know why you would back up because there is no way anyone can get to the rim from the free throw line with 1.5 seconds left. This happened at the end of laker v. magic, matt barnes stepped away, even though kobe missed, he should have done that.

So, jump straight up and guard kobe hip to hip and jump as high as you can when the ball rises.

EASY DEFENSE!

Jumping straight up is slower than jumping forward... so pretty much always ur gonna be too late to block the ball anyway. I had another point too.

Just lemme remember it :/

The further you are away from a play... like in your example with Dwight the less likely you are going to block a shot. The realease point of Kobe jumper is around 8ft, but the actual release plus arch would put the jumper at 13-15 feet or so (17+ ft if Derek Fisher is shooting). Thus making Howard look like a retard for jumping straight up. The reason you jump forward is that you are trying to block the shot at the 8ft -9ft release... not the arch of the shot.

I Howard was closer and jumps 11 ft Kobe can just do the shooters trick and jump into Howard and get a personal foul on Howard.

If you are hip on hip on a player they used the hip and the fade away to make space... again if you are hip to hip Kobe and get you in the air for another personal foul.

Also, don't forget that Howard had 5 personal fouls. All he can do is contest the shot as Howard was needed down the stretch.

All i know is that the magic played bad defense at the end cause they didnt contest shots that well.

How did they play bad defense?

Lakers shot 37% as a team. Thats good defense. Kobe was Kobe and you can't stop him when he's on like he was in that fourth quarter. In fact... had he had his foot behind the 3pt line this game might've gone into overtime.

The real problem was the shitty refereeing. Lakers loss or not, the officals dictated that whole game.

I miss when a hard foul was a hard foul and not a flagarent.

If it was that easy, I have a feeling that Kobe would be a wash, and not one of the most lethal offensive players in the game...

To jump as high as you can straight up, you need to gather yourself, and like CBI said, that would waste too much time, and the ball would be well out of reach. Also, Dwight Howard is about 7 feet tall and can jump like a motherfucker. Not every defender in the NBA can easily get their hands up 12 feet in the air.
