| #1 - Kobe Bryant
Kobe Bryant is the most RELIABLE scorer in the NBA, and as much as I hate to admit it, the league's most complete player. He's talented, understands the subtleties of the game, is one of the NBA's most clutch performers. He has his lapses, but so do all of the league's best players. Without Kobe Bryant, the Lakers would be a 44 win team, and a 7 or 8 seed in the West.
#2 - Toughness
Not only the addition of Ron Artest, but also the growth of Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom in that area. In 2007, the Lakers lack of toughness was evident, but since then, and even since the early part of last season, both players have made an obvious effort to improve their toughness. This Lakers team biggest weakness has now been erased.
#3 - Versatility
The Lakers have the option to go big with Bynum or small with Odom, and still be a great team either way. Odom gives them an advantage with the tough match up assignment he presents for big men and wings alike. Bynum's continuing improvement has led to him becoming a top 5 NBA center, and he has a size advantage over nearly every center in the NBA, allowing Pau Gasol to be defended by smaller and weaker big men, giving him a lot more offensive options.
#4 - Chemistry
Unlike the popular belief that Artest will kill the Lakers' chemistry, he will actually greatly improve it. The Lakers' unhappiest player last season was Lamar Odom, as he took a diminished role in a contract year. Not only does bringing in Artest, a veteran journeyman looking for some jewelry, improve chemistry over a young and ambitious Ariza, but he is also a very close friend of Lamar's. Their mutual presence in Los Angeles will keep both players in check.
#5 - Shannon Brown
No, Shannon Brown is not a future All Star. No, he is not a future All Defensive player. But he is a huge improvement over the aging Derek Fisher defensively. He gives the Lakers what they have lacked in the back court the last couple seasons. His athleticism, is a brand new thing that every team in the NBA is going to have to deal with along side Kobe Bryant. Derek Fisher has lost his ability to defend quick guards and create his own shot, and Brown brings that back to the Lakers.

| I'm with you Jade as well - I am quite surprised as well.
Yes, you are entitled to expressing your opinion, but I am pretty curious on what inspired this post. At first, I assumed that the Celtics or the Spurs may win the championship but now I am thinking that one cannot be absolutely sure until I see how the regular season goes.

The Lakers are weak at the point. [watch LAL v. Rockets playoffs 09 and LAL v. Magic reg. season 09] and one can see that Brooks and Nelson killed us. Fisher is getting older and it's hard for him to keep up with younger, faster PG's. Shannon Brown seems to be the solution to our weakness, and he may be a reliever for Kobe so I see a very busy season for Shannon. #4 is were I'm on the fence. LO was the unhappiest player on our roster this year and by adding Artest, it MAY improve his attitude. We may have also eliminated the competition between Artest and Kobe. If this does not become a power struggle between the two and if Artest is truly here to help us win, not try to lead the team, then I would agree that the Lakers have a Great chance at repeating. I don't want to take away from Boston or San Antonio because I respect both teams and I admire them to a certain extent [SAS over the celts of course ] so I wont say it's a guarantee that LA will repeat. They have a chance to be 2010 champs too.

It's funny how I think the Lakers are better than you do, Jade. LOL Stern is gonna push for a LAL-CLE finals, now he might not rig a game but I'm sure the Lakers will get a few questionable calls when it could have gone either way but the refs will side with the Lakers cuz they are the Lakers.
