Not a way to start your coaching career before midnight madness.

Julia Finlay, a junior guard for the Seahawks was kicked out of practice last Thursday for behavior "unbecoming of a Lady Seahawk" so that could mean being insubordinate or just being an asshole at practice for all I care. Head coach Cynthia Cooper, the Hall of Famer for the Houston Comets, could not make her run sprints because Finlay had plantar fascitis. An assistant coach then suggested log rolls when the player would be on her back and roll the length of court.

On Monday, Coop was on a recruiting trip, and the assistant supervised practice. She then made Finlay log roll for 30 minutes after practice. Finlay rolled the length of the court about a dozen times according to reports and vomited twice in the first 15 minutes. She vomited again in the last 15 minutes. While this was going on, the men's basketball team was beginning their workout.

Cooper apologized for the lack of judgment and that the act will never happen again both to UNCW and the girl's family. The coach was punished by the university, likely on probation and/or a pay cut or getting terminated. Finlay remains with the team for now but is unsure if she'll stay.

I think the punishment was extreme. Perhaps Finlay had to be punished, but the actions were still extreme. But also I have to question Cynthia Cooper here. She basically allowed the assistant to do this, which basically humiliated the player more than she had to be. Not a sign of a good head coach nor a good assistant for that matter. When Finlay vomited the first time, the punishment had to stop then and there, especially when there was a THIRD PERSON present. And if a player is vomiting yet still doing the exercise, why didn't the men's basketball team's coaching staff intervene? This had to have been a distraction their practice Or maybe they did and the assistant told them to back off...

Well news is a little old, but the player forced to do the log rolls has quit the team. She will however remain at UNC Wilmington. It's not surprising if Coach Coop let her stay on scholarship as a courtesy.
