Boston Celtics
Who owns them?
Boston Basketball Partners, LLC has owned the Celtics since 2002. It is a four man/entity which share equal authority. They are:
Wycliffe Grousbeck: He is the governor that will represent the team in owners meetings. He is a Michigan Law grad who was a corporate lawyer and a partner in capital funds.
Irving Grousbeck: A co-founder of Continental Cablevision, later bought out by MediaOne which was a Cable company. He is Wycliffe's dad and is a Harvard Business school grad. A smart family when you have graduate degrees from Harvard and Michigan.
Stephen Pagliuca: Managing director of Bain Capital which manages about $80 billion in assets. He is a Duke graduate where he played on the freshman basketball team, and went to Harvard Business school too.
The Abbey Group: A real estate management in the Boston area, their CEO is Robert Epstein.
Does Ownership own other teams and facilities?
No. They lease space at their home, TD Garden from Delaware North Companies and their CEO Jeremy Jacobs, who owns the arena as well as the NHL's Boston Bruins who also have scheduling priority over the Celtics.
Do I think that Ownership is doing a good job?
Yes, but they're going to face the music and must rebuild around Rondo with young talents, not old men looking for one more ring.
Since the current ownership bought the team in 2002, the Celtics had a painful rebuilding process for their standards, culminating in the 2007-2008 NBA championship over the hated LA Lakers and the 2009-2010 Eastern Conference Championship. The good news is two Finals Runs in three years, but they built the team through acquiring costly contracts involving players at the tail end of their primes or even past them. This year is likely their last hurrah at an NBA championship assuming there's no NBA next year.
Even though Rajan Rondo has become an unsuspecting star and the now undisputed leader of the team (though not necessarily the franchise player who's Paul Pierce without a doubt), Rondo won't be able to mask the Celtics' age at every other position forever. Once KG, Paul, and Ray have collectively just hit the wall in the next couple years or so, this team will have to be blown up to its core, and the Celtics faithful will have to rebuild one way or another.
At the box office the Celtics have averaged at least 85% capacity each season since the current owners took over, and have packed the house since KG came to Bean Town. Even after a Celtics rebuild begins, the team will get people still pack the house because they are after all, the Yankees/Steelers/Canadiens of the NBA and all of these teams have had periods of mediocrity and still came back from them.
