Before I start...a couple of things.
- I did not think of this idea. It was made by this dude Bob Fitzgerald.
- The brackets used in this are based off the standings from about two years ago.
Anyways, onto the format. The proposed format for the regular season would be something like this: we have 3 conferences instead of 2: Western, Eastern, and Central. The Western Conference would consist of two divisions, the Pacific and the Northwest. The Central Conference would include the Midwest and Southwest division. Finally, the Eastern Conference would include the Atlantic and the Southest divisions.
Now why would we do this? Well the first reason is obviously travel. Think about it or not, travel plays a biiiiig part in how a team performs on the road. In fact, 60% of teams lose on the road, which is a higher percentage than in other leagues such as the MLB, NFL, or NHL. If we had 3 Conferences, travel would play a lesser part because based on this format you would play the teams in your division 5 times (as opposed to 4), the other team in your Conference 4 times, and lastly you would play the teams from other conferences twice a year. This would provide more rest for players, and it also makes more sense for geographical rivals. The current NBA schedule makes it so that each team plays its division rivals 4 times, its conference rivals 4 times, and teams from the other conference 2 times. Does that make any sense, geographically? I'll give you an example using the Warriors. Right now, the play San Antonio and New Orleans the same amount of times they play Sacramento or Los Angeles. Using this proposed new regular season format, the Warriors would play Sacramento 5 times, and San Antonio and New Orleans 2 times.
Onto the playoffs. The current 2-2-1-1-1 format in the first 3 rounds and 2-3-2 format in the Finals is perfectly fine. However, the teams in the playoffs need to change. Every year, the Western Conference has had the more dominant teams. This year, for example, we might have 8 teams with 48 wins or more this year, while the Eastern Conference has teams like Charlotte, Miami, Milwaukee, and Chicago competing for playoff spots. The West has a .573 winning percentage against teams in the Eastern conference not just this year, but
for the past 10 years. How would we fix this? We award the 6 division winners an automatic bid, then the next 10 best teams get a spot, regardless of location. Here's what it would look like (remember, this is from the standing from 07-08)
and yeah... that about sums it up. I was gonna get to the cons of this idea, but I thought I'd save you guys some time...lol. What are your thoughts?
