Summary: This article guides you through how to convert Ultra HD 4K to Apple ProRes with perfect V/A sync for using with Final Cut Pro X or FCP 6/7 with smooth workflow.

It’s exciting that we can access more and more 4K videos in our media life such as from 4K camcorders like Sony FDR-AX100, Sony PXW-Z100, Panasonic GH4, Panasonic FZ1000, etc. Besides enjoying its Ultra HD video effect, what will you do next of these 4K video source? Obviously, most of you would like to import and edit 4K video in Final Cut Pro or other NLEs to make a stunning masterpiece. Whereas, Final Cut Pro won't deal with 4K videos instantly- have to wait for rendering or even can’t been recognized. The easy workaround I have worked out is to transcode 4K to Apple ProRes for FCP.

Although it has been possible to create 4K timelines in Final Cut Pro X, smooth editing of 4K footage in FCP X still requires instant playback of more than one stream of video footage at once. If you are still work on Final Cut Pro 6, FCP 7 or want to avoid the long-time rendering, a better solution to work 4K files in FCP is to convert 4K videos to ProRes, which is natively supported by FCP. To fulfill the task, a professional 4K Video Converter is needed indeed.

In this article I highly recommend the app Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac, which is one of the best 4K video to ProRes Converter I’ve used. With it, you can effortlessly encode/re-encode Sony(XAVC/XAVC S), Blackmagic, GoPro(4K MP4), Panasonic 4K footage for smoothly importing and editing in various non-linear editing systems (NLE), including Final Cut Pro X, FCP 6/7, iMovie, Final Cut Express, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, etc. Besides, this 4K Video Converter Mac is also available to customize the output resolutions to any size like 1080p, 2K, 4K as users want. Download the tool and start the 4K video conversion on Mac(Mavericks included).

How to Convert 4K to Apple ProRes 422, ProRes 4444

Step 1: Launch the 4K to ProRes Converter; click "Add" button from main menu to browse your computer hard drive and select the 4K files you want to convert. Or you can easily drag-and-drop files into this application for converting.

Step 2: Click the format bar, and move mouse cursor to "Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)" as output format.

Step 3: Click "Settings" button; you can adjust video and audio settings, including codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate, and audio channel. To down-convert ultra HD 4K to 1080p ProRes, do remember adjusting video size to 1920*1080. That is the exact 108p. If you want to keep the 4K resolution, just keep the original video size.

Step 4: Click "Convert" button to start encoding 4K files to Apple ProRes .mov for Final Cut Pro X or FCP 6/7 under Mac OS.

Additional Tips: If you meet any importing & editing problems with kinds of 4K video in FCP, FCE, iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, etc, you can link to 4K Workflow column to get the solution.
