San Antonio to host the 2011 WNBA All Star Game

Well the Spurs last hosted the NBA All Star game back in 1996 at the Alamodome, and now their owner, Peter Holt who also owns the Silver Stars gets to host the 1st WNBA All Star Game at a Western Conference site. That's right. In 15 seasons, the WNBA has never had an All Star Game in the Western Conference, where I could see a great showing in LA or Seattle especially where the leagues' two most rabid fanbases are for the western conference. Madison Square Garden has had an all star game three times (NYC also had the 2004 All Stars vs Team USA game at Radio City Music Hall so they hosted a WNBA event four times in 15 years), the Mohegan Sun had it three times, and the Verizon Center had it twice. San Antonio does love its basketball too however, and I think it will make a nice site for the game this summer.

The All Star Game will be on July 23, at 3:30 PM Eastern Time.

I get daily Spurs email updates so when I saw the subject line say "Spurs Sports & Entertainment Breaking News", I initially assumed that another injury had taken place, a huge contract signing, or something else big associated with the Spurs (aside from the Parker injury that took place at the time). Then I opened the email and said, "Oh...". That is great news though! Congrats to SA for being chosen to host a big event!
