| Last year Kovalchuk played a total 1674 minutes with 42 seconds for a total of 100,465 seconds. If he plays similar this year and if my calculations are correct he will make $1015.27 a second for the next 17 years

one reason why this isn't a bad deal. hockey players are still good at 40-43 years old. - King Of NJ wrote:

that's a second reason why this deal isn't bad.

| I don't think this is a bad deal as Nenad touched on.
My Devils want to win now. Not as if we're a rebuilding squad. He was a key peice we needed to help push for a Stanley Cup title and having a full year in Jersey will make us a contender again.
Hes one of the NHL's 5 best players and if we made a trade for him might as well keep a player that can help us win

| being a star player, he's gonna have the puck a lot. being a star player, having the puck a lot means he's gonna be having to do fancy moves and he's gonna get checked a lot, which no doubt is gonna wear him down before he's 40. | |

| NEWARK, N.J.(AP)—A person familiar with the issues raised says the NHL is rejecting Ilya Kovalchuk’s(notes) 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils because it circumvents the league’s salary cap.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because the NHL has not announced the decision to void the deal, the person tells The Associated Press on Tuesday night that Kovalchuk’s contract is illegal because the years of low salary at the end of the contract were added for the sole purpose of lowering the cap hit.
The person added that no side believes Kovalchuk will play the final years of the deal at the low salary numbers that were agreed to in the deal. The star forward was slated to earn only $550,000 in each of the last five seasons of the contract.

| Dammit it got disallowed.
I hope we get him back though. We're a Stanley Cup title contender and he showed he wants to return.
