| As you have heard before, I get NBA updates texted to my phone, and check out the one I just got:
"Thunder acquire G Daequan Cook, 18th overall pick in draft from Heat for 32nd overall pick"
Now somebody tell me I'm reading this wrong, because I don't see why on Earth the Heat would trade a player (a pretty bad one but still can be a decent role player...) AND their first round pick for the Thunder's 2nd round pick?
Somebody explain to me what the hell just happened...

| Simply put, cap space. They don't want Cook or a rookie, they want all the cap space they can get. I've been reading about stuff for a couple days now about the Heat planning to sell the pick. This way, they might get a decent player they want to sign, but it's not guaranteed money. Still think they should've just straight up sold it, though.
But yeah. By traditional standards, that comes off as a bone-headed Heat move and a big win for the Thunder.

| Heat want Boozer. Boozer want money. Heat no have money without trade. Trade good. | |

| How much can Daequan Cook's contract possibly be worth? 3 or 4 million max? Not much more cap space. I don't think Boozer wants a 3 year, 4 million dollar contract. | |

Nope. But combined with the rookie's guaranteed money, that could amount to, oh, five or six million? They're not just thinking about Boozer, they're thinking about (if Wade and Boozer were to get huge contracts) how they fill up the rest of the roster. One elite guy and one really good sidekick doesn't make a champion; you need solid players surrounding them. And for that, you need all the cash you can get.

| Well why would you trade a member of the supporting cast so you can MAYBE get a different one? | |

| Because there are thousands of role players better than Daequan Cook who would sign for the mid-level exception, i.e Eddie House, Drew Gooden, etc. | |

| You got me there. I thought Cook was one of the many Heat players whose contract was up at the end of this season. | |

House: 6 PPG, 2 RPG, 2 APG. 33% FG shooting, 25% 3P shooting. 100% FT shooting Cook: 5 PPG, 2 RPG, 1 APG. 32% FG shooting. 32% 3P shooting. 84% FT shooting. ***Since House ended the year with New York, I'm using his New York stats So really there is barely a difference between what House and Cook did (he shot much better with the Celtics, who had Rondo as a PG...coincidence? Nope) Gooden is pretty good, but with Jermaine O'Neal, Michael Beasley, and Udonis Haslem, where would he get a good amount of playing time? Somebody tell me if O'Neal, Beasley or Haslem's contracts are up right now, because I have no idea

| Beasley and Chalmers are the only two players the Heat assuredly have on contract next season (according to ESPN). | |

| Ooooo. I would just try to re-sign Haslem though. They're around the same age, and Haslem would be easier to get. They get pretty similar numbers anyway (Gooden gets 5 more PPG, but rebounds, assists, shooting percentage, and blocks are all similar)
And Haslem is a good jumpshot for a big man. And cool hair.

| I JUST found out about this trade off, and I'm ecstatic. We basically traded 14 picks up plus we got a 3-point shooter that we need. If Cook gets back to his great shooting form, that woud be icing on the cake. We now have 3 first round picks, plus White,Weaver,Harden, and Maynor. We could easily trade up, and I'm pretty sure Presti is going to trade up again. Presti is awesome! | |
