The celtics are 9-2 agaist the lakers in the finals, how is that a rivalry???

f I play bball against someone and defeat them pretty much every time, they aren't on my level, and I don't consider it a rivalry.

Just the fact the metup with eachother that many times solidifies it.

Also alot of the celtic wins were in the 60s when the NBA wasnt popular while the rivalry really got popular in the 80s

Yes,it is.Both teams are by far the best teams ever.Only the Lakers can challenge the Celtics to their # of total titles.When Lakers dominated the NBA in the 50's,the Celtics returned back with their domination in the 60's

Lakers won once in the 70's,Celtics twice.In their 80's,Boston 3 times vs 5 times that LA did

90's,no team beat anything

00's,Lakers own the era.Celtics are looking to finish it with great memories

They're 2-2 against each other since 1969. I think those series in the 60s set it up for a solid rivalry.

It's a rivalry because of the battles. Not the results.

7 of those Celtics victories came in the Bill Russell era. The Lakers could never beat the Celtics back then. You and I never got to witness those games unless you catch the few that are on ESPN Classics at random hours.

In the 80's that rivalry was reborn because of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson which in turn saved the NBA (which popularity of the sport had plummeted) and made pro basketball relevant again. I got to watch all of those. I remember those battles fondly.

It's a deep rivalry because even when the Celtics sucked for long stretches in the 90's and 00's it still didn't matter, when they came to the Forum or Staples Center we wanted to kill the Celtics. When the Lakers went to the Boston Garden they wanted that victory more than any other victory.

Now with the two best teams for the last three years rematching it's a re-imagining of the past.

But really it isn't.

I don't see the current Celtic-Lakers as a rivalry because Boston has been (Championship) relevant for only three years (winning one ring in 22 years) compared to the decades of winning and 7 title appearances and 4 titles since the 99-00 season for the Lakers.

It's a rivalry in terms of team history and memories and NBA marketing.

Of course it is, it always has been just not as much as the 80s, but always someone has to win, in every sport and every little thing in life..C's had the talent, heart or call it guts to win 9 out of 11 vs Lakers.

for one, they are the two (by far) greatest franchises in the nba.
two, something called hatred (i.e. kobe - garnett/pierce/rondo. lol)
and, almost all the time have these two franchises had great teams at the right times.

russell/cousy-chamberlain/west
bird/havlicek/parish/etc.-magic/kareem/worthy/etc.
kobe/gasol/and company-big 3/rondo/and company.
